Fly Higher brings a septet of stars for a centennial tribute to jazz legend and bebop pioneer Charlie ("Bird') Parker. Considered "one of the finest saxophonists going" (Pitchfork), Rudresh Mahanthappa partners with three-time Grammy-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington to lead a stunning lineup for the project: Charenée Wade (vocals), Adam O'Farrill (trumpet), Kris Davis (piano), Larry Grenadier (bass) and Kassa Overall, (DJ). Honoring Parker’s musical legacy but looking beyond it, their concert tracks the impact of an artist whose innovations as a player and composer changed the path of jazz—and powerfully influenced the evolution of new music that would become pop, rock and hip hop.

For 25 years, the Kennedy Center has paid tribute to legendary jazz pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981). On May 8, the Kennedy Center celebrates the 70th Birthday of an artist who performed at the first Williams Festival in 1996, host and NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater. Join Dee Dee as she takes the stage to perform with a select group of her closest friends in a birthday bash not-to-be missed. On May 9, the Festival continues with the featured supergroup, Artemis, with Renee Rosnes, Noriko Ueda, Allison Miller, Melissa Aldana, Ingrid Jensen, and Anat Cohen. Celebrate the life and work of Mary Lou Williams—who blazed a trail by overcoming industry gender and racial discrimination with a fearless devotion to musical innovation and creativity. A full line-up will be announced at a later date.

Named for the Olympian goddess of the hunt and the wild, this superlative sextet is an international affair, with members hailing from the U.S., Canada, Israel, Chile, and Japan.A veteran of work with Joe Henderson, J.J. Johnson, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Bobby Hutcherson, Rosnes is among the most accomplished pianists in jazz, having led 17 albums as a bandleader including her 2018 live quintet session Beloved of the Sky. Santiago native Melissa Aldana was the winner of the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition and has recorded four albums, most recently 2019’s quartet date Visions inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo. One of the great post bop trumpeters to rise in the late 20th century, Vancouver-born Juno Award-winner Ingrid Jensen has led 10 albums and collaborated with Terri Lyne Carrington, Dr. Lonnie Smith, the Vienna Art Orchestra, and Maria Schneider. Anat Cohen is the most celebrated clarinetist of her generation, winning the DownBeat Critics Poll for seven consecutive years. She’s recorded seven diverse sessions under her own name and four with her brothers Avishai and Yuval as the 3 Cohens. Bassist Noriko Ueda won third annual BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Jazz composition prize and is a member of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. New York-based drummer Allison Miller is a masterful musician and composer who leads the celebrated band Boom-Tic-Boom and has worked with artists including Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, and Virginia Mayhew. She’s led eight recordings including her latest, Glitter Wolf.
