One of the most innovative and influential guitarists of his generation, Kurt Rosenwinkel has been called “the sound of the future” (Chicago Tribune). With a career that began in the 1990s as a sideman with such singular artists as Gary Burton, Joe Henderson, and Paul Motian—and that now includes explorations of Brazilian music, electro-acoustic programming, the music of Chopin, and so much more—Rosenwinkel’s artistry is defined equally by his appetite for invention as it is his unbelievable playing. He now leads his own band in this extremely exciting Carnegie Hall debut.

Grammy-winning trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and first-call bandmate Steven Bernstein has been an essential voice in New York City’s jazz and creative music scene since the 1970s. With his own bands (including Sexmob, Millennial Territory Orchestra, and Diaspora Soul); as a former member of The Lounge Lizards and Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble; and as an arranger or sideman for such artists as Lou Reed, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Linda Ronstadt, Allen Toussaint, Laurie Anderson, Rufus Wainwright, and Nels Cline, Bernstein’s contributions to music are extraordinary. Prolific, versatile, and undefinable, Bernstein now makes his Carnegie Hall headlining debut, and the possibilities are nearly endless.

Joyce and George T Wein Shape of Jazz Series: Claudia Acuna
New York–based Chilean jazz vocalist Claudia Acuña leads her band in the intimate Zankel Hall Center Stage, which seats audiences all around the artists—an ideal setting for this event. The celebrated vocalist brings a lovingly curated selection of Latin American standards, songs that she notes “have lived from generation through generation beyond language and borders.” Among the featured selections are festive and poignant songs made famous to American listeners by Nat King Cole’s trio of Spanish-language albums. Acuña now reimagines the songbook for today’s audiences with her own captivating sound.
