Gent Jazz Festival and Jazz Middelheim are celebrating a unique momentum in the Flemish and Belgian jazz scene. 15 and 35 are the magic numbers behind us crossing the pond to New York on May 25. A Belgian-tinted musical evening not to be forgotten in Le Poisson Rouge is set to add lustre to the anniversaries of Gent Jazz Festival (15th edition) and Jazz Middelheim (35th edition) two of the leading Belgian festivals in Belgium. The programme includes 4 sets by Belgian musicians. First is Joachim Badenhorst his international Carate Urio Orchestra followed by Jozef Dumoulin and his Red Hill Orchestra in which we also meet New York residents Ellery Eskelin and Dan Weiss. Saxophone player Robin Verheyen his New York Quartet combines great musicality with an exhaustible drive and sense of adventure and includes heavyweights from the NY scene as Drew Gress, and Jeff Davis. The powerful sextet The Bureau of Atomic Tourism – or The B.O.A.T. – is an avant-garde free jazz formation led by Belgian drummer Teun Verbruggen with Tim Dahl, Nate Wooley and Jon Irabagon among others in the line-up. An evening of music not to be missed! ArtistsCarate Urio OrchestraJoachim Badenhorst (reeds, vocals), Sam Kulik (trombone, guitar, vocals), Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson (trumpet, electronics), Frantz Loriot (violin, effects), Nico Roig (guitar, vocals), Brice Soniano (double bass, vocals), Pascal Niggenkemper (double bass), Sean Carpio (drums, guitar, vocals) Saxophonist and clarinettist Joachim Badenhorst is one of those Belgians who on their own merits have built up an impressive international network. With the Carate Urio Orchestra he performs music that should find its audience far outside jazz, improvisation and experimental music. In the case of Badenhorst and his motley international crew, that means instrumental control, devised ensemble, free improvisation and an intensity not inferior to the better post-rock work. Carate Urio Orchestra official siteJozef Dumoulin & The Red Hill OrchestraJozef Dumoulin (Fender Rhodes), Ellery Eskelin (tenor saxophone), Dan Weiss (drums) ‘One of the most inventive pioneers in his genre’, ‘piano wizard’ or ‘keyboard magician’; these are but a few of the many superlatives heaped upon Jozef Dumoulin in the course of his career. Dumoulin dreams about music and makes music about dreams, and the same goes for his Red Hill Orchestra. The result is a vast sound poetry that both surprises and fascinates. Jozef Dumoulin official siteRobin Verheyen NY QuartetRobin Verheyen (soprano and tenor saxophone), Russ Johnson (trumpet), Drew Gress (contrabass), Jeff Davis (drums) Saxophonist Robin Verheyen caused a furore in Belgium at a young age with his style of playing, and in 2005 decided to move to New York, where he’s lived and worked ever since. With his NY Quartet, Verheyen bridges the gap between the tradition of blues, bob and swing, and provides a sample card of his skills; wild and fiery on soprano sax, contemplative like a painter on the tenor. Robin Verheyen official siteThe Bureau of Atomic Tourism (B.O.A.T.)Teun Verbruggen (drums), Tim Dahl (bass), Jozef Dumoulin (Fender Rhodes), Nate Wooley (trumpet), Jon Irabagon (saxophone), Hilmar Jensson (guitar) Teun Verbruggen is perhaps the hardest working man on the Belgian jazz scene, and is active in a number of divergent projects. In New York he is appearing together with The Bureau of Atomic Tourism, or B.O.A.T. for short. The sextet delves headfirst into abstract free improvisation that abandons all conventional takes on musical notions such as melody, harmony and rhythm at one point, you witness them raging like a well-oiled outfit with years of experience the next. The unpredictable improvisation may sound like an abstract sound poem, but this switches quickly to dazzling freak-outs in the New York avant-garde tradition. OZOMATLI plus BIG TONY & TROUBLE FUNKPlease help us sell out the Lincoln Theatre and raise more than $100,000 for the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth and the National Juvenile Defender Center.JusticeAid returns to Washington, DC’s historic Lincoln Theatre on Sunday, May 15, at 7 pm for an evening of incredible music featuring Grammy Award-winning, multi-genre powerhouse Ozomatli and local go-go legends Trouble Funk to benefit two amazing groups fighting for a better future for our children. All ticket sales will directly benefit the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) and the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY), organizations whose efforts are winning major battles nationwide to expand access to justice for America’s youth.“JusticeAid is proud to make 2016 our ‘Year of the Child’ by setting our sights on eradicating barriers to justice for young people,” said retired DC Superior Court judge, JusticeAid founder and current President Steve Milliken. JusticeAid’s campaign kicks off immediately on social media, where the group is highlighting its efforts and urging others to share their stories using the hashtag #WhatJusticeMeansToMe. You can find JusticeAid on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Vine.Alarmingly, the United States is the only nation in the world still sentencing children to life in prison without parole. NJDC and CFSY recognize that we can’t afford to settle for these statistics. Together, they are transforming our juvenile justice programs to support children facing troubling times.“NJDC promotes justice for all children by supporting the legal counselors who help them, and we’re so appreciative of JusticeAid for standing by us and raising awareness for our work. We need more groups like JusticeAid,” said NJDC Executive Director Kim Dvorchak.“CSFY uses a comprehensive approach to end the practice of sentencing children to life in prison without parole, which includes legislative advocacy, litigation, public education, and coalition building,” said Jody Kent Lavy, Director and National Coordinator for CSFY. The NJDC was founded in the late 1990’s to address the critical need to improve access to counsel and quality of representation for children in juvenile courts.Since its founding in 2009, CFSY has tripled the number of states banning life without parole sentences for children, played a major role in three Supreme Court victories for justice, and established a diverse national coalition to demonstrate the broad base of support for these crucial reforms.100% of ticket sales will be donated to these great beneficiaries of justice and freedom. The fair market value of tickets is $50. JusticeAid is a nonprofit charitable organization recognized as exempt from Federal income tax under Section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations to JusticeAid are deductible to the extent of the law for purposes of Federal income tax. You should consult your tax advisor regarding the deductibility of donations to JusticeAid.
