True to its Greek goddess namesake, the all-star jazz supergroup Artemis draws back its bow and strikes true at high-wire interplay and pure joy. Hailing from America, Canada, Israel, Chile and Japan, the sextet features Renee Rosnes (piano / musical director), Ingrid Jensen (trumpet), Anat Cohen (clarinet), Noriko Ueda (bass), Allison Miller (drums) and tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, the latter of whom Convocations presented to sold-out Carnahan Hall crowds in 2014. Regularly leading their own bands, the artists of Artemis gather their genius for selections spanning Thelonious Monk to the Beatles—presented with passion, power and sensitivity. This performance represents Convocations’ kick-off contribution to the 30th annual Purdue Jazz Festival, a Purdue University Bands event bringing more than 2,500 middle- and high-school students to campus for clinics and concerts.

Jazz icon Herbie Hancock has called Benin-born guitarist Lionel Loueke a “musical painter.” Loueke’s fluid guitar playing—inspired by African and traditional jazz—was one of the highlights of Angélique Kidjo’s sensational Remain in Light concert in 2017. Loueke and his trio, along with special guest Brazilian percussion superstar Cyro Baptista, honor Kidjo in a concert that both celebrates and reinvents many of her marvelous songs.

Come hear great music and learn about JusticeAid’s 2020 Voter Suppression initiative and our continuing mission to eradicate injustice through the arts.THIS FALL WE'RE DOING SOMETHING NEW.  In order to keep delivering vital support to key change-makers and to expand our calls to action against racism, poverty, mass incarceration, and injustice, we are presenting these jazz concerts in support of our own work at JusticeAid.DID YOU KNOW?Since our founding six years ago, JusticeAid has raised support and “calls to action” for a dozen grassroots justice organizations on the front lines fighting for civil rights.  Working primarily as a volunteer organization, we have presented over two dozen artists in concert, raising over $850,000 -- and more than $375,000 this past year alone for The Immigrant Defense Project, Civil Rights Corps, and Essie Justice Group
